If you want to use article marketing strictly as a way to boost your search engine rankings, it's probably not going to be too effective. There's just not going to be much juice pushing your site coming from these PR0 pages. However, it is a great way to get anchor variations to avoid over optimization penalities. This allows you to use more targeted anchors on your high PR links. The toughest thing about using article marketing with this in mind is getting your crap articles to index. The content has to be unique (whether it is scraped garbage or not) and then you will have to send another tier of garbage at this garbage. I use GSA SER and know that it works great for this purpose.
